Common questions about debt relief

Will debt relief hurt my credit?+

Debt settlement usually does, because it typically involves falling behind on payments while a settlement is negotiated. Consolidation loans and management plans generally do less damage. Any program that promises no credit impact deserves scepticism.

How long do these programs take?+

Settlement programs commonly run 24 to 48 months. Consolidation loans run whatever term you sign for, often 3 to 5 years.

Is forgiven debt taxable?+

Forgiven debt of $600 or more is often reported to the IRS as income. Ask a tax professional how that would apply to you before enrolling.
